Self Portrait #12
- "I am my Twin" -

Dear Jim:
"How hard can it be to say happy birthday?"

Difficult.

I am not sure how honestly to thank you. You have kept me alive times that I have wanted to die, brought me too near the edge when I wanted to be safe, and driven my life in directions I never thought it would or should go. The places your work has taken me, the things it has challenged and inspired in me, and the person I have become are all light years away now from the place where I was born.  (You see, I find I am not always sufficiently happy with myself to look at anything or anyone who made me what I am without mixing my reminescence with regret)

Nonetheless, I can with all sincerity and faith wish for you many more birthdays passing, and yet no more years upon you. May you never grow old, and never surrender. Your creations have stirred, changed, and shaped lives -- never think just because 1969 has long since past this time that you are old or that the dream engine has rusted away. Without hesitation I can say this: Thank you for the dream, while it lasts. Thank you for the music while the beat is strong and our veins run young. Thank you for changing and charging my art and my life. I am not sure I am happier with my eyes open than I was when they were closed -- but I am glad to have seen the sun.

Be. Live. Believe.

ps -- like the rest of your fans, I wait the promised Neverland. Will we see it before 2010?
