Isn't it funny how simple ideas can just snowball into huge projects? That's exactly the case with Jim Steinman Pacifica. JSP came to exist because of one simple question that was asked on the Rockman Record at the Dream Pollution website.
"Where can I buy Steinmusic in Australia?"Like all true obsessive-compulsives, I took the question as a challenge and produced a list of friendly stockists around the nation. I have no idea how many of these lists I emailed to fans in the first couple of weeks but it was a lot. The word spread like a bushfire, and soon I was getting requests for information from places as far away as South Africa, India and Ecuador. What became obvious pretty quickly is that there was a considerable fan-base in this part of the world that wanted a place to source information that targeted their local areas. And so it all began.
Since it's birth in December 1998, Jim Steinman Pacifica has gone from a single webpage called The Jim Steinman CD Shack to over three hundred pages carried across four servers, making it easily one of the largest, most comprehensive Jim-sites in the world. The new Sound Vaults section which provides sample sounds, videos and interviews now houses around 200 downloadable files which has been another great addition to the site.
An early change in direction also saw JSP alter it's focus from just providing local information to servicing the whole world, which has been well worth the effort with many regular visitors dropping in from the US, Sweden, Germany and the UK and most other points around the globe. My main aims now are to fill the gaps in the artist's lobbies and to keep the place laid-back and extreme. I want people to visit, have fun, get shocked - anything but bored. I don't want it to be just another information site - it has to stay young and vital, and I guess I take a fair bit of pride in the amount of original wallpapers, calendars and recordings that are available to fans. There are a lot of good things that are unique to JSP and I like that.
Probably the one thing that I find so overwhelming, and it's the best part of creating a site like this, is the amount of people from all around the world who are prepared to volunteer their time and information. JSP as it stands now, is the culmination of so many people's efforts, contributions, opinions, reviews and kind words of support. The place really is steered by what Jim Steinman fans want, and if they want to leave their mark on the place, they can.
I'd be very remiss if I didn't also mention the support I've received from my fellow webmasters, Jacqueline & Susan from Dream Pollution who so willingly let me scrounge and steal, Steen from Neverland Hotel who was very supportive during the early days, and Daniel from The Jim Steinman Temple for all the reviews and news that he willingly shares. I really have to say that it's an honour to be part of this group of dedicated Jim Steinman fans.
Thanks to everyone I've met along the way - you are a magnificent bunch of people who make the task worthwhile.
JSP is non-profit, and is not affiliated with Jim Steinman or any of his other interests in any way whatsoever. It is essentially a temple of worship, and an act of love (or obsession). :))
Jim Steinman Pacifica is part of The Naked Xavier T collage of websites, and is based in Brisbane Australia.
