Dear Jim Steinman,

I'm not sure, maybe I should have put 'god' there instead of your name. I usually don't get quite obsessive enough about artists to call them god (and have only, in fact, called Trent Reznor 'god' before), but you're too much of a genius to just be called that. I'm sure you've heard everything there is to say already, from god knows how many fans. I just want you to know that I'm another one of them.

Your music is so alive without being sappy, and it's dark without being pessimistic, and it's all just so beautiful. And believe me, you have to go to lengths to get the word 'beautiful' out of me. It's difficult to get out the proper words as to what your music/lyrics/concepts do to me. I can say that I was almost hyperventilating when I first sat through Dream Engine (actually, I did that the first time I read the script, and I did that far worse when I first heard it).

You have such a REAL view, while at the same time it's just so far out of this world. You have the most amazing speaking voice; I mean, ever. Confident, beautiful, ironic, erotic, everything. And your music has steadily been working its way deeper into my soul since Bat Out of Hell II came out (and I was 10 then). I think it's firmly embedded by now... Happy birthday, Jim. Keep on writing--PLEASE, keep on writing--and know that your fans will always, always love you.

Lori-Anne Hager
(and I only let a privileged few call me anything other than 'Lori')
