Roberto Storm,

Turku, Finland

I don't like most people, sometimes I hate my life
Sometimes I hate even you, maybe not tonight
I'm not so happy at my school, I am not so happy at home
I just want to be with you, see the dark, quiet town
Walk in the snowy night, in the pale starlight.
I still want to know where could we go
Where could we be completely alone
Sometimes I think I am someone else somewhere
Sometimes I just want to be with you
You are still the same, dangerous and strange
You are still the one I want to know
And I know what I know
And I know we're alone

From my song "The South-Tyrolean Lullaby" (1996)

Happy Birthday Mr Steinman!

I was born in 1975. I wrote my first song when I was 4. The lyrics were something cute about flowers. When I was 9, I wanted to be an opera composer and singer. For a few years I lived in the world of opera. I thought that there really was as much melodramatic love, murders and suicides in the real life as in operas. I spoke Italian as much as possible (mostly "si" and "no"). I thought that one beautiful and tall girl in our school was the gods' gift for me. When I was 12, I composed a quite good dramatic cantata about the Egyptian god Osiris. It was a bit like your rock&roll fantasies The Dream Engine and Neverland.

When I was 18, I was severely depressed and thought I would die. Theatre and acting saved my life. I was in Hair, Romeo and Juliet, and Piaf. Writing songs also helped me. Nowadays I write mostly rock and pop songs. My songs are often something that I call "baroque pop" or "psychedelic love songs". Maybe it's good for my songwriting that I haven't had much luck in love, I'm not sure if I could write this kind of songs otherwise. Of course it's possible that I could do something that I can't do now.

There's a Finnish music magazine that always asks the interviewees, what kind of sexual intercourse their music would be. The bands they interview are mostly hc-punk bands so they usually say something about anal fisting.
But my music would is like this: Summer 1763 in the Northern Italy. Signor Casanova is walking in the olive grove where he meets a noble lady. They make love on the grass while the servants watch them from behind the trees.

You are my favorite songwriter and an influence for me but I don't think my own songs sound like yours. Your most important influence on my songwriting is the attitude. I've learnt from you not to be afraid of going to extremes or showing my real feelings. I think I'd like to have a bit more of your kind of Sturm und Drang in my songs.

Besides your music, I listen to The Beach Boys, Queen, Serge Gainsbourg, Valensia, The Velvet Underground, Pet Shop Boys, ELO, and of course some opera music (Puccini, Mozart, Wagner, Verdi). I don't like most bands here in Finland. Though I don't listen that much to heavy metal, I think the best Finnish bands are all some kind of melodic metal bands: Nightwish (a gorgeous opera singer singing heavy metal), HIM (influenced by the Sisters of Mercy) and Waltari (a bit like Faith No More).

My dream is to be a famous singer-songwriter, release a lot of albums and do a lot of gigs.
