Narratives

How do Narratives differ to Short Stories?  Well, basically - to me at least - Narratives are like diary entries.  The author writes a Narrative reflecting on an experience in their life that s/he deems worthy of writing about.

I don't write a lot of Narratives.  I don't think people should.  One a year is usually ample.  Any more is self-indulgent or being a pompous twat.

The style of a Narrative is more real and invested with more emotion.  The writing style is grittier with less attention to grammatical perfection.  Some are laced with humour - Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, I always say - while others are dark and introspective.

I guess at the end of it all, I'm just trying to get my thoughts out.

Absence (Narrative 2009) is a random rant about love.
"Perhaps harshly voiced but in real terms, I allowed myself to be a backup whore this year. Don’t get me wrong – I was a whore to one, not a whore to many."

An Accidental Affection - Pt 1 (Narrative 2001) is a whimsical narrative about forbidden love and denial.
"We chatted all day about nothing, and my heart fluttered all the way home.  I'd developed a serious crush."

An Accidental Affection - Pt 2 (Narrative 2005) is a humorous revisit of the earlier piece.
"It's ironic, coz it's normally me who's the object of someone's misplaced affection, not the other way around."

Baby Seals and Hard Drives (Narrative 2007) is a slightly maniacal rant about frustration and friendship.  Contains a great deal of swearing.  I love it :)  "He goes sulky and I feel guilty for the 'stupid bastard' comment. I take another swig.  I roll a joint out of dregs beyond their use by date."

Beloved (Narrative 2012) is something I should have written many years ago instead of all this superfluous crap.  "I got upset that a stranger could be nice to me while my father couldn't, and I cried as little boys might.  My father stormed out and called me a faggot pansy and told me to go home."

Cute Guy 37 (Narrative 2006) gives me a laugh every time, no doubt because it's true.  Everyone has been in this situation I'm sure, but how one escapes from the blind date from hell is a different story. :)
"The lesbians at the next table seem to be enjoying the entertainment and make no effort to leave."

Gold Coast Ramblings (Narrative 1999) more info to come.

Shelley Beach Ramblings (Narrative 2000) more info to come.

Top End Ramblings (Narrative 2000) is my tale of an extraordinary night in Darwin.
"The Dutch guy laughs at the goings-on as if he knows some private joke.  I wonder briefly if I've entered the twilight zone."
