HIV / AIDS : ARE YOU AT RISK?

Twenty years since AIDS became a household word, it's amazing how much fear and ignorance still exists in the Health and Lifestyle Industry.

First, what's the difference between HIV and AIDS? HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus which directly attacks the immune system. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the sickness that results if the body's immune systems, already weakened by HIV, becomes too overwhelmed.

At this point in time, and despite frequent media hype, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. That said however, new drug treatments are allowing people infected with HIV to live longer healthier lives, and as a result, fewer people are dying. Approximately 22,000 Australians are infected with HIV/AIDS, which is one of the lowest rates in the world.

How does this affect people in the Health Industry? Usually it doesn't. HIV is a very fragile virus, and is difficult to contract. It can only be transmitted through direct exchange of blood, semen, or mother's milk, and even then the conditions must be perfect. HIV cannot be transmitted through dead body tissue such as sweat, urine and faeces.

Therefore, the only health professionals who are exposed to any risk of HIV infection during the normal course of work, are those who handle infected blood, semen, or injecting equipment, and strict precautionary measures are usually in place in such professions.

There is virtually no risk to Massage Therapists, Reflexologists, Aromatherapists, Fitness Instructors etc. There is no real evidence that any Natural Therapies decrease the symptoms of HIV/AIDS.

However, clients who are infected will certainly benefit from understanding, and from the simple human interaction of a compassionate Therapist.
